Although self-defense is generally what I think about when I hear “martial arts,” this studio has gone way beyond that in the development of our children. I believe confidence is the #1 benefit that both of our children have gained from this program. Providing a chance for children to gain experience leading the class (with many students older than they are), teaching other students at a lower rank, and presenting their skills in front of the class or judges at graduation, provides a rare opportunity for any activity geared toward children. We have a 9 year-old boy who just became a 2nd degree black belt. He is a spirited, yet sensitive kid, and Mr. Nguyen has taken him under his wing and turned him into a champion, both in karate and in his life outside the studio. He’ll compete in the world championships this month. Our 7 year-old daughter can be very shy, but she has gained self-confidence, strength and flexibility through this program. We’ve realized that Black Belt is a title that our kids will have for a lifetime. Long after they have forgotten a winning season in baseball or soccer, they will always remember the significance of becoming a black belt, and the confidence they gained will last a lifetime.
